Only at Dell Med

One of the differentiators of graduate medical education at Dell Med is its signature curriculum focused on health systems science: Advancing Care Transformation, or ACT. This unique approach to education is of a kind with Dell Med’s innovative M.D. program, focused on equipping students to tackle systemic challenges in health and lead change in an evolving health care landscape.

Foundations in Care Transformation

Atypical to traditional graduate medical education, all residents at Dell Med complete ACT’s Foundations in Care Transformation training, which emphasizes value-based care, quality improvement, equity, leadership and teamwork. Trainees participate in a lecture and interactive learning series that includes topics such as introduction to health systems science, distributed leadership, health systems scholarship, health informatics, policy, economics and health equity.

The foundational training — also available to fellows at their option — ensures that physicians advance their skills as systems-ready leaders and are prepared to engage in the critical work of revolutionizing how people get and stay healthy.

Distinction in Care Transformation

In addition to the Foundations in Care Transformation training that all residents complete, residents or fellows who wish to engage more deeply with the concepts of health systems science may pursue honors in the form of a Distinction in Care Transformation, which requires active learning and application of improvement science and features workshops focused on interprofessional education, communication and value-based health care.

Those who complete the honors option receive recognition at graduation and earn a special designation on their diploma.

Timeline & Selection

All residents and fellows may apply to the Distinction in Care Transformation honors track. A selection process ensures that trainees pursuing the distinction option are prepared for the rigors of the additional training required.

The selection process and timeline to completion will vary by program.

Distinction Projects

Residents or fellows pursuing the Distinction in Care Transformation have protected time to complete a required scholarly health systems project. Projects within the honors distinction are individualized based on viability of each resident’s proposal and area of interest. Residents may design mentored projects working within the medical school on central institutional initiatives or within other colleges across The University of Texas at Austin campus. Opportunities exist to develop robust value-based care proposals, research studies or health care products.
